After reaching number one in the Japanese box office, the latest film in the Dragon Ball franchise was finally released in the USA. Dragon Ball Super: Broly has two different periods of time. First, it tells the origin story of Broly, Vegeta and Goku, a segment that includes the destruction of the Saiyan home world by the most enduring villain of Dragon Ball, Frieza. From there, time goes on after the events of the latest Dragon Ball Super Arc, which saw Goku assemble a Team of warriors to fight in a multiverse tournament( yes, Dragon Ball has a multiverse). A fun setup orchestrated by Frieza brings Broly to a collision course with Goku and Vegeta, both fresh from the lessons learned from the struggle against the natives of other universes.

The animation and character designs, especially the redesigns by Broly and his father, Paragus, return to Dragon Ball’s magnificent kineticism and playfulness. So many small nods.

Past series are embedded in the non-fighting segments that it feels like a journey of nostalgia, even if the film does not set itself up as a franchise love letter. The story, written by Toriyama himself, retells and re-contextualizes the narrative of Goku ‘s father, Bardock and Broly completely. This leads to a film that is much more satisfying than the 1993 film’s flat narrative.

One of the big complaints about the initial launch of the Dragon Ball Super revolved around some rough sequences of animation. This perception persisted long after the show improved to some of the best the franchise had seen, because it became a meme. Dragon Ball Super: Broly manages to combine the best grittier style of Dragon Ball Z with the clean, fluid movement of Super’s esthetics to create it.This new artistic direction for the animation comes from Naohiro Shintani, the director of the film’s animation. The introduction of adult Goku and Vegeta is one of the best parts of the film, simply because it shows how beautiful and fun their match is on the screen.
